Talk Saves Lives: A Closer Look at SafeTALK
Suicide prevention isn’t just for doctors or therapists—it’s a skill anyone can learn. In Elko County, the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention offers SafeTALK, a straightforward training program that helps neighbors look out for neighbors.
What exactly is SafeTALK?
SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness For Everyone) is a 3-hour, face-to-face workshop. It’s designed to help you move past the "I don't know what to say" phase and give you the tools to actually help.
In the workshop, you’ll learn how to:
Notice the signs: Spot the subtle (and not-so-subtle) red flags that someone is struggling.
Start the conversation: Learn how to ask the hard questions directly and with heart.
Bridge the connection: Get that person to the right professional help or crisis resources.
These sessions are practical and down-to-earth. You’ll go through real-world scenarios and practice with a facilitator who knows how to keep the conversation safe and respectful.
Who is this for?
Everyone. Whether you’re a parent, a coach, a coworker, or just a friend, you can do this. You don’t need a degree or prior experience—just a willingness to show up for your community.
988 vs. 911: Getting the right help
